Uses of Drones for Police Department and Law Enforcement

When it comes to drones, most people think of leisure drones flown in the park, but drones are used in police departments and law enforcement as well. For example, there are many events that require fast responses, whether they are emergency calls or reported accidents. When there are such events, law enforcement can send drones as first responders because they are not only faster than automobiles, but they can also record what is going on in that scene. This way, the people who will be arriving at the scene will have some idea of what the area is like and what kind of situation they should expect, which makes it much safer for the police officers. It would also make it much safer for the people in the area where the danger is taking place because if it were to be a person trying to harm others, the drones could reach the area within minutes and scare off the perpetrator. There are benefits to using drones instead of automobiles, as they are much more environmentally friendly, don't use fossil fuels, and are more cost-friendly.

Similar to ensuring safety, these drones can deliver first aid kits and offer quick help to those in need. This technology is an effective tool for people to get aid and can even go so far as to save lives. DJI, one of the leading drone companies, stated that as far as 2019 goes, about 279 lives were saved by drones in emergencies. This proves how drone technologies are highly successful in the field of law enforcement.

In terms of the many duties police officers have, one of the most known is their high ability to survey and observe areas like roads, neighbors, etc. However, one police officer can only cover so much area, but with drones, they can fly higher to widen their perspective and fly closer if they spot any suspicious activity. Once the activity is spotted, the drone can inform the flyer and department of its exact location and provide pictures and recordings of what it saw.

When emergencies and accidents take place at night, drones can scan with heat sensors or a camera with night vision to record proof and evidence of what occurred in a certain area. This would be much more accurate and effective in locating people and places. In addition, if there are reports of a lost person or if a person is held hostage, the drone can be a tool to negotiate and save the people. Many hostage negotiations can quickly turn bad because the perpetrator harms the police or the negotiator, but by using drones, these incidents can be avoided.

Lastly, drones can aid in improving traffic control systems by flying high above to identify traffic movements, which can be translated into data for traffic controllers to identify the best traffic patterns for the most effective and safe movement. It can be conclusively seen that drones are far more useful than simply being used for fun, serving a great purpose in our society.
