Drone Privacy and Control Over Information

Technology is slowly taking over everything in society, including jobs, our simple daily activities, and even commonplace household items, such as a refrigerator or a light fixture. In addition, technology has become so advanced it is able to learn our daily habits and tailor their responses in conjunction with our actions. As convenient as this feature may be, this raises many questions, specifically about the privacy of our personal data. Drones, consequently, are also being researched to analyze the extent at which they should be able to access our personal information and what boundaries should be met to keep us safe while limiting the personal information they receive. These two facets have a proportional relationship: As the amount of confidential information they are able to access increases, security increases as well.

Drones and Our Information

Common belief has it that drones are anonymous, as they are able to take to the skies without anyone knowing who is in control of the drone. However, their anonymity cannot be trusted. Drones store personal information in their memory chips, and if someone gets their hands on the controller of a drone, they can open up the owner’s setup account. Shockingly, credit card numbers may be stored in the account if market purchases were made, and even details like an email or an address may be stored inside the account as well.

Although this feature initially sounds bad, the feature has an advantageous side to it. For instance, when an emergency rescuer requires your information or they need to locate you, they can use the GPS of your drone and get your information from your drone setup account in order to help you. Drones also have the ability to encrypt your information and store it in local/cloud storage, preventing data loss and improving accessibility for your data.

Possible Solutions

Preventing drones from knowing too much of your personal information and/or preventing hackers from stealing your personal information can be a daunting problem to overcome. However, there are ways to remedy this. You can encrypt your data, use secure communication channels, update your software and firmware, hire a professional, and more. Using these methods, the safety of your information increases greatly and reduces the chances of your security being breached.

Conclusion

Drones are able to store our personal information without us knowing for both the worse and for the better. It is up to us to decide how we utilize this feature in order to safely use drones and not let our personal data get breached.
